Jerry Bakar was born in Pendleton in the late 50’s and grew up on the Bar M Ranch up the Umatilla River. He went to school in Athena and graduated from Weston-McEwen high school in 1978. Jerry attended BMCC for two years, then went to OSU for two years. He graduated in 1982 with a degree in Business and a minor in Forestry. He continued to work at the Bar M but returned to BMCC to further his education in 1987. It was here where he met his wife Elsa who is from Mazatlán in Mexico. They were married in 1990, and have raised two children, Jimmy, and Melina. He left the Bar M in 2000 and moved to Athena. For the last 15 years he has been working as a Wildlife Biologist for Western Ecosystems. Jerry serves as chairman on two budget committees including the city of Athena and Umatilla County and is a commissioner for the Port of Umatilla. He is also the chairman of the Umatilla County Wolf Depredation committee. He ran unsuccessfully for Umatilla County Commissioner in 2013.Jerry loves to spend time with his family, and he loves to fish. He studied Spanish at BMCC, and after living 25 years with a Mexican cutie, he is fairly fluent. Jerry became a licensed real estate agent in January 2015.
