Pontiac, Michigan Description
Pontiac, Michigan is a city located in Oakland County, Michigan. It is situated about 30 miles north of Detroit and is part of the Metro Detroit area. The city has a population of 59,515 people as of the 2010 census.
Pontiac was founded in 1818 by Chief Pontiac, an Ottawa Indian chief who had been exiled from his native Canada. The city was named after him and has since become a major industrial center in the region. It is home to several large automotive plants, including General Motors' Pontiac Assembly Plant and the GM Powertrain plant.
The city also has a vibrant downtown area with many shops, restaurants, and entertainment venues. There are several parks located throughout the city, including Waterford Oaks County Park and Pontiac Lake State Recreation Area. The city also hosts several annual events such as the Woodward Dream Cruise and the Pontiac Music Festival.
Pontiac is served by two major highways: Interstate 75 and M-59. The nearest airport is Oakland County International Airport which is located about 20 miles away in Waterford Township. The city also has its own public transportation system called SMART (Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation).
