One of a small cluster of historic buildings associated with 18th century Petersburg resident & business owner John Baird Junior this historic home with its raised stone English style basement probably originally resembled the gable-fronted John Baird Building that survives nearby on Grove Avenue. In its original configuration it appears to have been a three-bay style facade most likely with a gabled front with a central door flanked on each side by windows that gave passage to a main front room. Behind this central room was a smaller room flanked by a hall containing a stairway. An off-center exterior chimney provided heat to this room and the room directly above it. A one-room, one 1 1/2-story addition was made to the rear at an early date and the kitchen appears to have been located in the English basement or cellar. This addition was likely added when the residential part of the building required expansion possibly when it was purchased by Richard Bate around 1796. In the early 19th century the front room was converted into a sitting room with an ornate Federal-style mantel with over-mantel with and arched recess to the right with the mantel and arched recess still intact.
