Step back in time to the year 1911. The civil war had ended 46 years ago, but the first World War is rapidly approaching. On top of the property that historians say was used as a Union Hospital, James B. Hedge (b. 1849, d. 1928), editor of the Athenian newspaper in Athens, built this amazing home after he moved to Athens from Iowa. It was Hedge who named the home Cedar Glen. After WWI, the home was bought by Merrill L Smith Sr. after losing much of his eyesight in the war. Several WWI medals were found in the home and will remain! After only 2 more ownership transfers, this incredible historic home is available and ready for restoration. The home has been upgraded with a metal roof. In 2022, a brand new HVAC system was installed. Enjoy the magic of the Austrian Crystal chandeliers and handmade moldings throughout. Interesting fact...some of the moldings were originally constructed out of piano wire and wooden checkers! Other details were shipped from Chicago to make the home special for the time. The home was purchased with an amazing pipe organ that is how housed at Lee University after 2500 worth of complete restoration. The stone "bricks" were handmade with the original mold found in the Carriage house. Any damaged stones could easily be reconstructed with the mold to give the repair true authenticity. The second level of the home is the August Room. An open-concept area the family would utilize in the hot August weather.
