Our house on Calhoun RD was constructed in 1922 by the same carpentry crew/contractor that build The Grand Daddy Pine lakes Country Club and I understand that they were also involved with the building of Ocean Forest Hotel. (1925) A carbon copy of 402 Calhoun was also build in about the same time south from here on the Ocean Blvd, this residence is currently owned by Mr. and Mrs. Spadoni who own the Budweiser franchise in Myrtle Beach. (Date approx 1925) I am in the process of applying for Historic Home designation by researching the court records in Conway with the help of Mr. Burroughs, the historian employed with Coastal Carolina University. The first owner (this was mentioned when we bought the house in Dec 1972) was involved in the lumber industry and the proof of this is in the construction of the frame. All exterior walls have approx full size rough cut 2x4s (About 50%) with the rest of the studs either 4x4 0r 4x6 in length reaching from the foundation beams to the rafters for the roof in lengths of 20 ft or more. The outer parts of the exterior walls have Tongue and Groove boards x 6 nailed to the studs in herringbone pattern for strength. Thirty pound felt created the vapor barrier and the siding consist of x14 hard pine siding. The entire inside walls were finished with Beaver board topped with stucco, since this was in places in bad shape I have replaced these walls with 5/8 - 2 hr fire rated wall board throughout the existing parts of the house as well as the newly added extensions. The four load bearing walls in this residence are located perpendicular to the road and include the massive chimneys on each end as well as the two interior ones in the halls. Six large beams (8x10) in the living room for instance are carrying the floor joists of the upstairs rooms and are cradled in the load bearing hall walls. This type construction was typical in this era and extensively used in the construction of commercial mills. The only problem I encountered soon after we purchased this home was that some settling had occurred in the east wall of the hall which had caused the staircase to become unleveled I consequently installed some heavy duty jacks in the basement and elevated the wall back over a period of 6 months. A completely new staircase was installed. Also because the railing spindles were spaced too far apart and did no longer comply with the building code. A basement is under about 50% of the main house with the rest a 3 ft crawlspace a second basement is located under the front porch the total square feet is about 1600.
