In 1801, President Jefferson rode his horse, along with a small entourage, to Barracks Row, and at the corner of 8th and I Streets, SE said build it here. Of course, he was referring to what would become the oldest Marine Post of the Corps. Who would have known that some 165 years later, Barry Linde would ride up to a dilapidated corner (7th and G, SE) just some 2 blocks from where President Jefferson made his proclamation, and similarly proclaimed, I will build it here. Of course he was referring to what would become known as Lafayette Row some 9 signature Linde townhomes that would replace some sketchy commercial/residential structures that had seen their day. Sidewalk talk had it that a brothel operated out of the two properties on the corner of 7th and G SE. The site was surrounded by the former Walker Hill Dairy that had closed in the 20s. By the time Barry built, there was a thriving Safeway on much of the site of the former dairy. One Capitol Hill family saw their opportunity and in 1965 bought one of Lindes famous (or infamous) townhomes. Tastefully built, Barry designed these homes to be spacious and affordable. His hope was to draw young buyers back to the city.. and, in that he succeeded. Take a little trip today and come see 542 7th Street SE and feel a part of this important Washington DC history.
