Charles Town, West Virginia Description
Charles Town, West Virginia is a small city located in the Eastern Panhandle of the state. It is situated in Jefferson County, and is the county seat. The city was founded in 1786 by Charles Washington, brother of George Washington. It was named after him and has been an important part of the region ever since.
The city has a population of around 5,000 people and covers an area of about 4 square miles. It is located near the Potomac River and is close to both Washington D.C. and Baltimore, Maryland. The city has a rich history that dates back to colonial times when it served as a trading post for settlers traveling through the area.
Charles Town is home to many historic sites including the Old Charles Town Jail, which was built in 1808 and served as a prison until it closed in 1864.
