Washougal, Washington Description
Washougal is a small city located in Clark County, Washington, United States. It is situated on the Columbia River, just east of Vancouver and north of Camas. The population was 14,095 at the 2010 census.
The city was founded in 1854 by Captain William Strong and named after the Washougal River which flows through the area. The river was named by French-Canadian fur traders who called it "La Chaudière" meaning "the cauldron".
Washougal is known for its natural beauty and outdoor recreation opportunities. The city has several parks including Captain William Strong Park, which features a playground, picnic areas, and a boat launch. There are also several trails for hiking and biking throughout the city.
The economy of Washougal is largely based on agriculture and light industry. Major employers include Weyerhaeuser Company, Boise Cascade Corporation, and Columbia Forest Products. There are also several small businesses located in downtown Washougal that offer unique shopping experiences.
Washougal is served by two school districts: Camas School District and Evergreen School District. Both districts offer excellent educational opportunities for students from kindergarten through high school graduation. In addition to public schools, there are also several private schools located in Washougal as well as nearby Vancouver and Camas.
The city of Washougal hosts many events throughout the year including an annual Fourth of July celebration with fireworks display over the Columbia River, an annual car show in August, and a holiday parade in December.
