Shelton, Washington Description
Shelton is a small city located in Mason County, Washington, United States. It is situated on the south shore of the Olympic Peninsula, approximately 25 miles west of Olympia and 60 miles southwest of Seattle. Shelton is the county seat of Mason County and has a population of 9,834 as of 2019.
The city was founded in 1853 by Captain William Shelton and was originally known as Sheltonville. The city was incorporated in 1890 and has since grown to become an important commercial center for the region.
Shelton is home to many outdoor activities such as fishing, hunting, camping, hiking, boating, and kayaking. The nearby Olympic National Forest provides plenty of opportunities for outdoor recreation. The city also boasts several parks including the Shelton City Park which features a playground, picnic areas, walking trails, and a skate park.
The economy of Shelton is largely based on timber production and related industries such as logging and wood products manufacturing. Other major employers include healthcare providers such as Mason General Hospital & Family of Clinics and retail stores such as Walmart Supercenter.
