Mount Vernon, Washington Description
Mount Vernon is a city in Skagit County, Washington, United States. It is the county seat and largest city of Skagit County. The population was 31,743 at the 2010 census. It is one of two principal cities of and included in the Mount Vernon-Anacortes Metropolitan Statistical Area.
Mount Vernon is located on the banks of the Skagit River, about 10 miles (16 km) north of Burlington and 60 miles (97 km) north of Seattle. It is home to a number of historic buildings, including the Lincoln Theatre, which opened in 1921 and was restored in 2006. The city also hosts an annual Tulip Festival each April, drawing visitors from around the world to view its tulip fields.
The city has a variety of parks and trails for outdoor recreation, including Little Mountain Park, which offers views of Mount Baker and the Cascade Mountains; Riverside Park along the Skagit River; and Centennial Trail for biking or walking along the riverfront. Other attractions include a farmers market held every Saturday from April through October; a public library; several museums; and an aquatic center with swimming pools, slides, and other water features.
Mount Vernon has a temperate climate with warm summers and cool winters. Average temperatures range from highs in the mid-70s Fahrenheit (mid-20s Celsius) during summer months to lows in the mid-30s Fahrenheit (around 0 Celsius) during winter months. Rainfall averages around 30 inches (76 cm) per year with snowfall occurring occasionally during winter months.
