Williamsburg, Virginia is a city located in the Hampton Roads region of the Commonwealth of Virginia. It is situated on the north bank of the James River, about 100 miles (160 km) south of Washington, D.C., and is part of the Greater Richmond Region. The city is home to the College of William & Mary, Colonial Williamsburg, and Busch Gardens Williamsburg theme park.

Williamsburg was founded in 1632 as Middle Plantation by members of the Virginia Company of London as a fortified settlement on high ground between the James and York rivers. The city served as the capital of the Colony and Dominion of Virginia from 1699 to 1780 and was the center of political events in Virginia leading to the American Revolution. During this time, Williamsburg served as a major center for education and culture in colonial America. After the American Revolution, it became an independent city in 1783 and was renamed Williamsburg after King William III of England.

Today, Williamsburg is known for its well-preserved 18th-century architecture, its historical significance as a colonial capital, and its proximity to other popular tourist destinations such as Jamestown Settlement and Yorktown Battlefield. The city also offers a variety of attractions including museums, galleries, restaurants, shops, golf courses, wineries, breweries, distilleries, outdoor activities such as hiking trails and kayaking on nearby rivers or lakes. Additionally, there are several annual festivals held throughout the year that celebrate local culture and history.
