Springfield, Virginia Description
Springfield, VA is a census-designated place located in Fairfax County, Virginia. It is an unincorporated area and part of the Washington Metropolitan Area. Springfield is located approximately 16 miles southwest of Washington, D.C., and is home to a population of over 30,000 people.
The area was first settled in the early 1700s by English colonists and was originally known as "Springfield Plantation". The area was later renamed "Springfield" after the nearby spring that provided water for the plantation. In 1847, the Orange and Alexandria Railroad opened a station in Springfield, which helped to spur growth in the area.
Today, Springfield is a vibrant community with many amenities for its residents. It has several shopping centers including Springfield Mall and The Shops at Fairfax Corner. There are also numerous restaurants, cafes, bars, and entertainment venues throughout the area. Additionally, there are several parks and recreational areas such as Lake Accotink Park and Burke Lake Park which offer outdoor activities like fishing, boating, hiking trails, playgrounds, picnic areas and more.
The public schools in Springfield are part of Fairfax County Public Schools system which includes elementary schools such as Rolling Valley Elementary School and Key Middle School; high schools such as West Springfield High School; and higher education institutions such as Northern Virginia Community College - Annandale Campus.
