Hampton, Virginia Description
Hampton, Virginia is a city located in the Hampton Roads region of southeastern Virginia. It is bordered by the cities of Newport News, Norfolk, and Virginia Beach. The city has a population of approximately 137,000 people and is home to Hampton University, one of the oldest historically black universities in the United States.
The city is known for its rich history and culture. It was founded in 1610 by English settlers and was one of the first cities established in what would become the United States. During the American Revolution, it served as an important port for British forces. In 1861, it was occupied by Confederate forces during the Civil War and later served as a major base for Union forces during Reconstruction.
Today, Hampton is a vibrant city with many attractions and activities to enjoy. The downtown area features historic buildings such as St. John's Episcopal Church and Fort Monroe National Monument. There are also several museums including the Hampton History Museum and Air Power Park which showcases aircraft from World War II through present day. The city also offers plenty of outdoor activities such as fishing, boating, kayaking, biking trails, golf courses, parks and beaches along its waterfront area on Chesapeake Bay.
Hampton is also home to several festivals throughout the year including Blackbeard Festival in June which celebrates local history with live music performances and reenactments; Neptune Festival in September which celebrates local seafood with arts & crafts vendors; and Harborfest in October which celebrates maritime heritage with boat races and fireworks displays over Hampton Roads Harbor.
