Sour Lake, Texas Description
Sour Lake is a small town located in Hardin County, Texas, United States. It is situated about 25 miles east of Beaumont and about 10 miles west of Kountze. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census.
The town was founded in 1894 by the Sour Lake Oil Company, which discovered oil in the area. The company built a refinery and a railroad line to transport the oil to Beaumont. The town grew rapidly as workers flocked to the area for jobs in the oil industry.
Today, Sour Lake is still a small town with a population of just over 1,800 people. It has several churches, two schools (K-12), and several businesses including restaurants, grocery stores, gas stations, and other services. The town also has its own police department and fire department.
The climate in Sour Lake is humid subtropical with hot summers and mild winters. Average temperatures range from lows of around 40°F (4°C) in winter to highs of around 90°F (32°C) in summer. Rainfall averages around 45 inches per year with most occurring during spring and summer months.
Sour Lake is known for its beautiful scenery including rolling hills covered with pine trees and wildflowers that bloom throughout spring and summer months. There are also several lakes nearby that offer fishing opportunities as well as recreational activities such as boating and swimming.
