Port Bolivar, Texas Description
Port Bolivar is a small unincorporated community located in Galveston County, Texas, United States. It is situated on the Bolivar Peninsula at the eastern end of Galveston Bay, approximately 50 miles southeast of Houston. The town was founded in 1838 and named after Simón Bolívar, a Venezuelan military leader who helped liberate much of South America from Spanish rule.
The town has a population of around 1,500 people and is known for its beautiful beaches and fishing opportunities. The area is popular with tourists and locals alike for its stunning views of the Gulf Coast and its many outdoor activities such as swimming, boating, kayaking, bird watching, and more. The town also has several restaurants and shops to explore.
Port Bolivar is home to the historic Fort Travis Seashore Park which offers visitors a chance to explore the ruins of an old fort built in 1836 by the Republic of Texas to protect against pirate attacks. The park also features a museum with artifacts from the fort's history as well as a lighthouse that was built in 1872.
The town is served by two ferry routes that connect it to Galveston Island and other nearby communities. There are also several marinas located in Port Bolivar where visitors can rent boats or launch their own vessels into the bay.
