Mineola, Texas Description
Mineola, Texas is a small town located in Wood County, Texas. It is situated on the banks of Lake Fork Reservoir and is part of the Tyler metropolitan area. The population of Mineola was 5,037 at the 2010 census.
The town was founded in 1873 by a group of settlers from nearby Quitman, Texas. The name Mineola was chosen to honor a local Indian princess named Minnie Ola. The town quickly grew and by 1885 it had become an important railroad center with two railroads running through it.
Today, Mineola is known for its historic downtown area which features many buildings from the late 19th century and early 20th century. There are several antique stores and restaurants located in this area as well as a few art galleries and museums. The city also has several parks including the Mineola Nature Preserve which offers visitors a chance to explore nature trails and observe wildlife in its natural habitat.
The city also hosts several annual events such as the Mineola Fair which takes place every October and features carnival rides, live music, food vendors, and more. Other popular events include the Mineola Music Festival which takes place every June and features local bands playing various genres of music; the Mineola Rodeo which takes place every April; and the Mineola Christmas Parade which takes place every December.
Mineola is also home to several educational institutions including East Texas Baptist University, Kilgore College-Mineola Center, and Trinity Valley Community College-Mineola Center. These institutions offer students a variety of degree programs ranging from associate's degrees to master's degrees in various fields such as business administration, nursing, education, engineering technology, computer science, criminal justice, psychology, social work, and more.
