Marshall, Texas Description
Marshall, Texas is a city located in the northeastern part of the state, about halfway between Dallas and Shreveport, Louisiana. It is the county seat of Harrison County and has a population of around 24,000 people. The city was founded in 1841 and named after Chief Justice John Marshall of the Supreme Court.
The city is known for its historic downtown area which features many buildings from the 19th century. The most notable building is the Harrison County Courthouse which was built in 1846 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Other attractions include the Michelson Museum of Art, Starr Family Home State Historic Site, and East Texas Oil Museum.
The economy of Marshall is largely based on manufacturing and distribution with companies such as Tyson Foods, Pilgrim’s Pride Corporation, and Wal-Mart having major operations in the area. Education is also important to Marshall with Wiley College being located here as well as several other institutions offering higher education opportunities.
Marshall has a humid subtropical climate with hot summers and mild winters. The average temperature ranges from lows in the mid-30s during winter to highs in the mid-90s during summer months. Rainfall averages around 40 inches per year with most occurring during spring and summer months.
