Jacksonville, Texas Description
Jacksonville, Texas is a small city located in Cherokee County, Texas. It is situated about 130 miles east of Dallas and about 150 miles north of Houston. The city has a population of around 14,000 people and covers an area of 8.3 square miles.
The city was founded in 1846 by settlers from the nearby town of Rusk. It was named after President Andrew Jackson and quickly grew to become a center for trade and commerce in the region. Jacksonville is known for its historic downtown area which features many old buildings from the 19th century, including the former courthouse which now houses the Cherokee County Historical Museum.
The city is home to several parks and recreational areas, including Lake Jacksonville which offers fishing, boating, swimming, camping, and other outdoor activities. There are also several golf courses in the area as well as a number of museums and art galleries.
Jacksonville is served by two school districts: Jacksonville Independent School District (JISD) and Rusk Independent School District (RISD). JISD serves most of the city while RISD serves some parts of it. The city also has several private schools including Jacksonville Christian Academy and St. Joseph Catholic School.
Jacksonville is home to several annual events such as the Tomato Fest in June, the Dogwood Festival in April, and the Christmas Parade in December. The city also hosts a variety of festivals throughout the year such as music festivals, art festivals, car shows, rodeos, and more.
