Huntsville, Texas is a city located in Walker County, Texas, United States. It is the county seat of Walker County and is situated in East Texas. The city has a population of approximately 38,000 people and is the center of the Huntsville-Walker County Metropolitan Statistical Area.
The city was founded in 1836 by Pleasant and Ephraim Gray and was named after their hometown of Huntsville, Alabama. It quickly became an important trading post for settlers moving westward from the eastern United States. During the Civil War, it served as a major Confederate supply depot and was home to several Confederate prisons.
Today, Huntsville is known for its rich history and culture. It is home to Sam Houston State University, which was founded in 1879 and is one of the oldest public universities in Texas. The university offers a variety of degree programs ranging from business to engineering to criminal justice. The city also boasts several museums including the Sam Houston Memorial Museum, which houses artifacts related to Sam Houston's life and legacy.
