Hempstead, Texas Description
Hempstead, Texas is a small town located in Waller County, about 50 miles northwest of Houston. It is the county seat and has a population of around 6,000 people. The town was founded in 1856 and named after Dr. G.S. Hempstead, an early settler who donated land for the town's first courthouse.
The town is known for its historic downtown area which features several buildings from the 19th century including the old post office and the old jailhouse. There are also several churches in the area including St. Mary's Catholic Church, First United Methodist Church, and First Baptist Church.
Hempstead is home to several parks and recreational areas such as Hempstead Lake Park which offers fishing, boating, camping, and hiking trails; Hempstead City Park which features a playground and picnic areas; and Hempstead Country Club which offers golfing and tennis courts. The town also has a public library as well as several restaurants and shops.
The economy of Hempstead is largely based on agriculture with cotton being one of the main crops grown in the area. Other industries include oil production, manufacturing, retail trade, health care services, educational services, construction services, transportation services, finance services, real estate services, professional services, hospitality services and government services.
HempSTEAD is served by two school districts: Hempstead Independent School District (ISD) and Waller ISD. The town also has a community college called Blinn College-Brenham Campus which offers associate degrees in various fields such as business administration and nursing.
Overall Hempstead is a small but vibrant community that offers its residents plenty of opportunities to enjoy outdoor activities while still having access to all the amenities of a larger city nearby.
