Hawkins, Texas Description
Hawkins, Texas is a small town located in Wood County, Texas. It is situated about 90 miles east of Dallas and about 30 miles west of Tyler. The population of Hawkins is approximately 1,500 people.
The town was founded in 1873 by William Hawkins, who named it after himself. It was originally a farming community and the main crops were cotton and corn. In the early 1900s, Hawkins began to grow as an industrial center with the establishment of several factories including a cotton gin, sawmill, and grist mill.
Today, Hawkins is still a small rural town with a strong sense of community. The downtown area consists of several historic buildings including the old post office and courthouse which are now used as museums. There are also several churches in town that serve the local population.
The economy of Hawkins is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The town has several large farms that produce cotton, corn, soybeans, hay, and other crops. There are also several factories that produce furniture and other wood products as well as metal products such as tools and machinery parts.
