Gilmer, Texas is a small city located in the northeast corner of the state, about 100 miles east of Dallas. It is situated in the foothills of the Piney Woods region and is surrounded by lush forests and rolling hills. The city has a population of just over 5,000 people and is known for its friendly atmosphere and small-town charm.
The city was founded in 1873 and named after George W. Gilmer, who served as governor of Georgia from 1829 to 1831. The town was originally a trading post for local farmers and ranchers, but it has since grown into a thriving community with a variety of businesses and services.
The downtown area features several historic buildings, including the old Gilmer County Courthouse which dates back to 1876. There are also several churches, including First United Methodist Church which was built in 1895. The city also boasts several parks, including Gilmer City Park which features a playground, picnic areas, walking trails, and an outdoor amphitheater.
Gilmer is home to several annual festivals such as the East Texas Yamboree Festival which celebrates the area’s agricultural heritage with live music, food vendors, carnival rides, and more. Other popular events include the Gilmer County Fair which features livestock shows, rodeos, tractor pulls, arts & crafts booths, and more.
