Gatesville, Texas Description
Gatesville is a small city located in Central Texas, about an hour and a half from both Austin and Waco. It is the county seat of Coryell County and has a population of around 15,000 people.
The city was founded in 1854 by James G. Gates, who named it after himself. It was originally a farming community, but has since grown to include many other industries such as manufacturing, retail, and healthcare.
Gatesville is known for its historic downtown area which includes several buildings from the late 19th century. The most notable of these is the old courthouse which was built in 1891 and still stands today. Other attractions include the Coryell Museum & Historical Center which houses artifacts from the area’s past, as well as the Gatesville Public Library which offers a variety of books and resources for locals and visitors alike.
The city also boasts several parks including City Park which features a playground, picnic areas, walking trails, and more; Lions Park which offers basketball courts, tennis courts, and a swimming pool; and South Park which has baseball fields, soccer fields, and an outdoor amphitheater.
Gatesville is home to several annual events such as the Coryell County Fair in August; the Gatesville Country Music Festival in October; and the Christmas Parade in December. The city also hosts numerous festivals throughout the year including the Texas State Chili Cook-off in April; Taste of Gatesville in May; and Watermelon Fest in July.
