Fort Stockton, Texas Description
Fort Stockton is a city located in the western part of Texas, United States. It is the county seat of Pecos County and is situated on the northern edge of the Chihuahuan Desert. The city has a population of 8,283 as of 2019 and covers an area of 10.2 square miles.
Fort Stockton was founded in 1859 as a military outpost to protect travelers on the San Antonio-El Paso Road from Indian raids. The fort was named after Robert Field Stockton, a U.S. Navy Commodore who fought in the Mexican-American War. The fort was abandoned in 1883 but the town continued to grow and develop around it.
Today, Fort Stockton is known for its rich history and culture, as well as its outdoor activities such as hunting, fishing, camping, and hiking. The city also boasts several historical sites including Fort Lancaster State Historic Site, Comanche Springs Astronomical Observatory, and Fort Stockton Historic District.
The economy of Fort Stockton is largely based on agriculture and oil production with some tourism activity due to its proximity to Big Bend National Park and other attractions in West Texas. The city also has several educational institutions including Sul Ross State University at Alpine and Odessa College at Fort Stockton Campus.
Fort Stockton offers a variety of amenities for residents including shopping centers, restaurants, parks, museums, libraries, golf courses, swimming pools, movie theaters, bowling alleys and more. It also hosts several annual events such as the Pecos County Fair & Rodeo in April and the West Texas Cowboy Reunion & Music Festival in July.
