Elgin, Texas Description
Elgin, Texas is a small city located in Bastrop County, about 30 miles east of Austin. It is known for its historic downtown area and its proximity to the Colorado River. The population of Elgin is around 8,000 people and it has a total area of 6.2 square miles.
The city was founded in 1872 by railroad workers who named it after Robert Morris Elgin, the first president of the International-Great Northern Railroad. The city grew rapidly due to the railroad industry and became an important center for cotton production in the late 19th century.
Today, Elgin is home to several businesses including a large cement plant, a steel mill, and several manufacturing plants. It also has a vibrant downtown area with many shops and restaurants as well as a historic movie theater that dates back to the 1920s. The city also hosts several festivals throughout the year such as the Elgin Sausage Festival and the Elgin Crawfish Festival.
Elgin is served by two school districts: Elgin Independent School District and Bastrop Independent School District. There are also several private schools in town including St. Mary's Catholic School and Elgin Christian Academy. The city also has two parks: Martin Luther King Jr Park and Lions Park which offer recreational activities such as swimming pools, playgrounds, tennis courts, basketball courts, baseball fields, picnic areas, walking trails, and more.
