Decatur, Texas Description
Decatur, Texas is a small city located in Wise County, about an hour northwest of Fort Worth. It is the county seat and has a population of around 6,000 people. The city was founded in 1857 and named after Stephen Decatur, Jr., a naval hero of the War of 1812.
The city is known for its historic downtown area, which features several buildings from the late 19th century. The most notable building is the Wise County Courthouse, which was built in 1895 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Other attractions include the Decatur Public Library, which houses a collection of books and artifacts related to local history; the Decatur Historical Museum; and the Wise County Heritage Museum.
Decatur also has several parks and recreational areas including Lake Bridgeport State Park, which offers camping, fishing, boating, swimming, hiking trails and more; Lake Decatur Park; and Fairview Park. There are also several golf courses in town as well as a bowling alley.
The city hosts several annual events such as the Wise County Fair in August; the Decatur Music Festival in October; and Christmas on Main Street in December. There are also many restaurants offering everything from Mexican to Italian cuisine. Shopping options include antique stores, boutiques, gift shops and more.
