Canton, Texas Description
Canton, Texas is a small town located in the northeast corner of the state, about 60 miles east of Dallas. It is part of Van Zandt County and has a population of around 3,000 people. The town was founded in 1848 and named after the city of Canton in China.
The town is known for its annual First Monday Trade Days, which began in 1873 and is one of the oldest flea markets in the United States. The event takes place on the first Monday of each month and attracts thousands of visitors from all over Texas and beyond.
Canton is also home to several historic sites, including the Old Mill Museum, which houses artifacts from early settlers, as well as a replica of an old-fashioned grist mill. The Canton Historical Museum offers exhibits on local history and culture, while the Van Zandt County Courthouse features a beautiful clock tower that dates back to 1891.
The town also boasts several parks and recreational areas, including Lake Tawakoni State Park which offers camping, fishing, swimming, boating and other outdoor activities. There are also several golf courses nearby for those looking to hit the links.
