Bonham, Texas Description
Bonham is a small city located in Fannin County, Texas. It is situated about 75 miles northeast of Dallas and is the county seat of Fannin County. The population of Bonham was 10,127 at the 2010 census.
The city was founded in 1837 by James Bonham, a hero of the Battle of the Alamo. The city was named after him and has since become a thriving community with a rich history.
The downtown area of Bonham is full of historic buildings and homes that have been preserved over the years. There are several museums in town, including the Sam Rayburn House Museum, which showcases artifacts from the life and career of former Speaker of the House Sam Rayburn. Other attractions include the Fannin County Historical Museum, which features exhibits on local history, and the Red River Railroad Museum, which houses an extensive collection of railroad memorabilia.
Bonham also offers plenty of outdoor activities for visitors to enjoy. Lake Bonham is located just outside town and offers fishing, boating, swimming, camping and other recreational activities. The city also has several parks with playgrounds and picnic areas for families to enjoy.
Bonham is home to Austin College, a private liberal arts college affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA). The college offers undergraduate degrees in more than 40 majors as well as graduate programs in education and business administration.
