Beaumont, Texas is a city located in the southeastern corner of the state, near the Louisiana border. It is part of the Beaumont-Port Arthur metropolitan area and has a population of 118,296 as of 2019. The city is known for its rich history, diverse culture, and vibrant economy.
Beaumont was founded in 1835 by Henry Millard and named after his wife Mary Dewburleigh Barlace Warren Beaumont. The city quickly grew to become an important port on the Gulf Coast due to its proximity to the Sabine River and access to the Gulf of Mexico. During World War II, Beaumont was home to several military bases and served as a major shipbuilding center.
Today, Beaumont is a thriving city with a strong economy based on oil production, manufacturing, healthcare, education, and tourism. The city is home to several large employers such as ExxonMobil Corporation, Lamar University, Christus Southeast Texas Health System, and Entergy Corporation.
Beaumont offers plenty of attractions for visitors including museums such as the Fire Museum of Texas and Spindletop-Gladys City Boomtown Museum; outdoor activities like bird watching at Cattail Marsh Wildlife Management Area; shopping at Parkdale Mall; and entertainment venues like Ford Park Arena. There are also numerous festivals throughout the year such as Mardi Gras of Southeast Texas and Gusher Days Festival that celebrate Beaumont’s unique culture.
Beaumont is also home to many parks including Tyrrell Park which features a golf course, tennis courts, walking trails, picnic areas and more; Riverfront Park which offers fishing piers; and Babe Zaharias Memorial Golf Course which was designed by legendary golfer Babe Zaharias.
