Baytown, Texas Description
Baytown is a city located in the U.S. state of Texas, within Harris County and Chambers County. It is situated on the northern side of Galveston Bay, near the outlets of the San Jacinto River and Buffalo Bayou. The city is part of the Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land metropolitan area and has a population of approximately 77,000 people.
Baytown is known for its rich history, which dates back to 1822 when it was founded by William Scott. The city was originally called Bay Town due to its location on Galveston Bay, but was later changed to Baytown in 1948.
The city has a humid subtropical climate with hot summers and mild winters. Average temperatures range from lows in the 40s during winter months to highs in the 90s during summer months. The area receives an average annual rainfall of 48 inches per year.
Baytown is home to several attractions including San Jacinto Mall, Pirates Bay Water Park, and Goose Creek Country Club. There are also numerous parks and trails throughout the city for outdoor recreation such as fishing, boating, hiking, biking, and bird watching.
The economy of Baytown is largely based on oil refining and petrochemical production due to its proximity to Houston Ship Channel and other major ports along the Gulf Coast. Other industries include manufacturing, retail trade, healthcare services, education services, transportation services, finance/insurance/real estate services, professional/scientific/technical services, construction services, hospitality services and government services.
