Athens, Tennessee is a small city located in the southeastern corner of the state. It is nestled in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains and is home to a population of just over 13,000 people. The city has a rich history that dates back to its founding in 1822.

Athens is known for its beautiful natural scenery and outdoor activities. The city is surrounded by lush forests, rolling hills, and numerous lakes and rivers. There are plenty of opportunities for hiking, camping, fishing, boating, and other outdoor activities. The nearby Cherokee National Forest provides an abundance of wildlife viewing opportunities as well.

The downtown area of Athens features many historic buildings that have been preserved over the years. These include the McMinn County Courthouse, which was built in 1836 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Other notable landmarks include the Athens Arts Center, which houses a variety of art galleries and performance spaces; the Mayfield Dairy Visitor Center; and several museums dedicated to local history and culture.

Athens also offers plenty of shopping opportunities with several antique stores, boutiques, gift shops, and specialty stores located throughout town. There are also several restaurants offering a variety of cuisines from around the world as well as traditional Southern fare.

The city hosts several annual events such as the Athens Storytelling Festival in October and Christmas on Main Street in December. Athens also has an active music scene with live performances at venues like The Ritz Theatre or The Melting Pot Music Hall & Cafe throughout the year.
