Warwick, Rhode Island Description
Warwick, Rhode Island is a city located in Kent County, Rhode Island. It is the second largest city in the state with a population of 82,672 as of 2019. Warwick is situated on the banks of Narragansett Bay and is bordered by East Greenwich to the west, West Warwick to the south, and Cranston to the east. The city has a total area of 24.4 square miles and is home to several beaches, parks, and recreational areas.
The city was founded in 1642 by Samuel Gorton and was originally named Shawomet after an Indian tribe that lived in the area. The name was changed to Warwick in 1643 after Robert Rich, 2nd Earl of Warwick. The city has a rich history that includes being part of King Philip's War in 1675 and being occupied by British forces during the Revolutionary War.
Today, Warwick is known for its diverse economy which includes manufacturing, retail trade, health care services, educational services, finance and insurance services as well as tourism. The city also boasts a vibrant arts scene with several galleries and museums such as the Warwick Museum of Art and the Rhode Island School of Design Museum.
Warwick also offers plenty of outdoor activities such as fishing at Conimicut Point Park or exploring one of its many parks like Goddard Memorial State Park or Rocky Point State Park. There are also several golf courses located throughout the city including Valley Country Club and Metacomet Country Club.
