York, Pennsylvania Description
York, Pennsylvania is a city located in the south-central region of the state. It is the county seat of York County and is situated along the Susquehanna River. The city has a population of approximately 44,000 people and is part of the larger Harrisburg-York-Lebanon Combined Statistical Area.
York was founded in 1741 by settlers from Philadelphia and named after York, England. It quickly became an important center for trade and industry due to its location at the intersection of several major roads. During the American Revolution, York served as the temporary capital of the United States for one day in 1777 when Congress met there to draft the Articles of Confederation.
Today, York is known for its vibrant downtown area which features a variety of shops, restaurants, galleries, and other attractions. The city also boasts several historic sites including Colonial Complex at Penn Park, Central Market House (the oldest continuously operating farmers market in America), and York County Heritage Rail Trail (a 22-mile trail that follows an old railroad line).
The city has a strong economy with many large employers such as Harley Davidson Motor Company, Glatfelter Paper Company, and Utz Quality Foods. There are also several higher education institutions located in or near York including Penn State University – York Campus, York College of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg Area Community College – York Campus, and HACC – Gettysburg Campus.
