Uniontown, Pennsylvania Description
Uniontown is a city located in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is situated in the Laurel Highlands region of the state, approximately 39 miles south of Pittsburgh and about 50 miles east of Morgantown, West Virginia. The population was 10,372 at the 2010 census. Uniontown is the county seat and largest city of Fayette County.
Uniontown is home to many historical sites and landmarks. The National Road, also known as U.S. Route 40, runs through the center of town and was one of the first federally funded highways in the United States. The road was built in 1806 and connected Cumberland, Maryland to Vandalia, Illinois. Uniontown was an important stop along this route due to its location at the base of Chestnut Ridge.
The city is also home to several historic buildings including the Fayette County Courthouse which dates back to 1837 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Other notable buildings include St John's Episcopal Church (1845), Old Stone House (1850), Uniontown Armory (1917), and Uniontown High School (1925).
Uniontown has a vibrant downtown area with many shops and restaurants that offer a variety of cuisines from Italian to Mexican to American fare. There are also several art galleries that feature local artists' work as well as live music venues for those looking for a night out on the town.
The city also offers plenty of outdoor activities such as hiking trails at nearby Ohiopyle State Park or fishing at Youghiogheny River Lake which is just minutes away from downtown Uniontown.
