Strabane, Pennsylvania is a small borough located in Washington County, Pennsylvania. It is situated along the banks of the Monongahela River and is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The population of Strabane was 1,845 at the 2010 census.
Strabane was founded in 1786 by John Strabane, who purchased land from the local Native Americans and established a trading post. The town grew quickly and soon became an important stop on the National Road, which connected Cumberland, Maryland to Vandalia, Illinois. In 1817, Strabane was incorporated as a borough.
Today, Strabane is a quiet residential community with a few small businesses. The town has several parks and recreational areas including Strabane Park and Memorial Park. There are also several churches in town including St. Paul's Lutheran Church and St. Mary's Catholic Church.
The economy of Strabane is largely based on agriculture and light industry. There are several farms in the area that produce corn, soybeans, hay, wheat, oats, and other crops. There are also several small manufacturing companies located in town that produce metal products such as steel tubing and wire products for industrial use.
Strabane is served by two school districts: Canon-McMillan School District and Peters Township School District. The Canon-McMillan School District serves students from kindergarten through 12th grade while Peters Township School District serves students from kindergarten through 8th grade. Both school districts offer excellent educational opportunities for students living in Strabane as well as those living nearby in surrounding communities such as Canonsburg and McMurray.
