New Castle, Pennsylvania Description
New Castle, Pennsylvania is a city located in Lawrence County, Pennsylvania. It is the county seat and the largest city in the county. The city is situated along the banks of the Shenango River and is part of the greater Pittsburgh metropolitan area.
New Castle has a population of approximately 23,000 people and covers an area of 8.5 square miles. The city was founded in 1802 by James O’Hara, a Revolutionary War veteran who named it after his hometown of New Castle, Delaware.
The city has a rich history and was once an important industrial center for steel production and coal mining. Today, New Castle is home to several large employers including UPMC Horizon Hospital, New Castle School District, and several manufacturing companies.
The downtown area of New Castle features many historic buildings including the Old Courthouse which dates back to 1851 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Other attractions include Cascade Park which offers hiking trails, picnic areas, playgrounds, and a swimming pool; Cascade Locks Park which features a boat launch; and Moravia Park which offers tennis courts, basketball courts, baseball fields, and more.
New Castle also hosts several annual events such as the Lawrence County Fair in August; the Little Italy Festival in September; and Christmas in New Castle in December. There are also numerous restaurants offering everything from Italian to Mexican cuisine as well as plenty of shopping opportunities at local stores or at nearby malls like The Grove City Premium Outlets or The Millcreek Mall Complex.
