Lancaster, Pennsylvania is a city located in the heart of Lancaster County. It is the county seat and the largest city in the county. The city has a population of 59,322 people as of 2019.
The city was founded in 1730 by settlers from Philadelphia and named after Lancaster, England. It was an important center for trade and commerce during the colonial era and was known as the "Capital of Pennsylvania".
The city is home to many historic sites, including the Central Market, which has been operating since 1730. The Fulton Opera House, built in 1852, is one of the oldest theaters in America. The Lancaster Museum of Art features works from local artists as well as international ones.
Lancaster is also home to several universities and colleges such as Franklin & Marshall College, Millersville University, and Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology. There are also several private schools such as Lancaster Country Day School and Lancaster Mennonite School.
The city has a vibrant arts scene with numerous galleries, museums, theaters, and music venues. There are also many festivals throughout the year such as the annual Chameleon Music Festival and Lancaster Roots & Blues Festival.
Lancaster is known for its Amish culture which can be seen throughout the area with horse-drawn buggies on its streets and farms selling fresh produce at roadside stands.
The city has a variety of restaurants ranging from traditional American fare to ethnic cuisine such as Mexican or Italian food. There are also plenty of shopping opportunities with stores ranging from small boutiques to large malls like Park City Center Mall or Tanger Outlets at Rockvale Square.
