Chambersburg, Pennsylvania Description
Chambersburg is a borough in Franklin County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is located in the Cumberland Valley, which is part of the Great Appalachian Valley. The population was 20,268 at the 2010 census. Chambersburg is the county seat of Franklin County and is part of the Harrisburg-Carlisle Metropolitan Statistical Area.
Chambersburg was founded in 1764 by Benjamin Chambers, a Scots-Irish immigrant who had purchased a large tract of land from William Penn. The town was laid out by his son, Benjamin Chambers Jr., and named after him. It was incorporated as a borough on January 19, 1803.
Chambersburg is located at the northern edge of Cumberland Valley and lies between Blue Mountain to the east and South Mountain to the west. The town is situated along U.S. Route 11 and Interstate 81, which provide access to nearby cities such as Harrisburg (45 miles south), Hagerstown (50 miles north), and Baltimore (90 miles southeast).
The town has a humid continental climate with hot summers and cold winters. Average temperatures range from 28°F in January to 76°F in July. Average annual precipitation is 40 inches with snowfall averaging 24 inches per year.
Chambersburg offers many recreational activities for residents and visitors alike including hiking trails, parks, golf courses, swimming pools, tennis courts, museums, theaters, shopping centers and more. The downtown area features historic buildings dating back to the 1800s as well as modern restaurants and shops. There are also several annual festivals held throughout the year including Oktoberfest and Applefest that attract thousands of visitors each year.
