Springfield, Oregon Description
Springfield, Oregon is a city located in the Willamette Valley of western Oregon. It is situated on the banks of the Willamette River, just north of Eugene and south of Salem. The city has a population of over 60,000 people and is part of the Eugene-Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area.
The city was founded in 1848 by Elijah Bristow and was originally named Calapooya after a local Native American tribe. It was later renamed Springfield after Springfield, Massachusetts by settlers from that area. The city has grown steadily since its founding and today it is home to many businesses, including several large employers such as PeaceHealth Medical Group, Cascade Health Solutions, and Symantec Corporation.
The climate in Springfield is mild with warm summers and cool winters. Average temperatures range from highs in the mid-80s during the summer months to lows in the mid-30s during winter months. Rainfall averages around 40 inches per year with most precipitation occurring between November and March.
Springfield offers many recreational activities for residents and visitors alike. There are numerous parks throughout the city including Island Park which features a playground, picnic areas, walking trails, and a boat launch onto the Willamette River. Other attractions include Splash! at Lively Park which features an outdoor pool complex with slides, waterfalls, lazy river rides, and more; Dorris Ranch Living History Farm which offers educational tours about early farming practices; and Gateway Mall which offers shopping opportunities for all ages.
In addition to its recreational offerings, Springfield also boasts a vibrant arts scene with several galleries featuring local artists’ work as well as live music venues hosting both local and national acts throughout the year.
