Shawnee, Oklahoma is a city located in Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma. It is situated on the North Canadian River and is part of the Oklahoma City metropolitan area. The population of Shawnee was 31,543 as of the 2010 census.
Shawnee is known for its rich history and culture. It was originally inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Shawnee, Kickapoo, and Pottawatomie. The city was founded in 1831 by the Methodist Episcopal Church and named after the Shawnee tribe.
The city has a variety of attractions to offer visitors including museums, historic sites, parks, and recreational activities. The Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art houses a collection of art from around the world and features rotating exhibits throughout the year. The Pottawatomie County Historical Society Museum showcases artifacts from Shawnee's past including Native American artifacts, pioneer tools, and more. Other attractions include the Santa Fe Depot Museum which houses railroad memorabilia from Shawnee's past; FireLake Grand Casino which offers gaming entertainment; and Little Axe Park which features a lake with fishing opportunities as well as picnic areas and playgrounds for children.
Shawnee also offers a variety of shopping opportunities with stores ranging from small boutiques to large department stores. There are also several restaurants offering cuisine from all over the world including Mexican, Italian, Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Indian, and more.
Shawnee is home to several annual events such as the Annual FireLake Grand Casino Powwow which celebrates Native American culture; the Annual Pottawatomie County Fair which features carnival rides; live music performances; food vendors; arts & crafts booths; livestock shows; rodeos; tractor pulls; demolition derbies; parades; fireworks displays; and much more!
