Pryor, Oklahoma Description
Pryor, Oklahoma is a small city located in the northeastern part of the state. It is situated in Mayes County and is part of the Tulsa Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population of Pryor was 8,659 at the 2010 census.
The city was founded in 1887 and named after Nathaniel Pryor, a member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. It has grown steadily over the years and now serves as a regional hub for commerce, industry, education, and recreation.
The economy of Pryor is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several large companies such as Tyson Foods, Inc., which employs over 1,000 people in its poultry processing plant. Other major employers include Walmart Distribution Center, Mid-America Industrial Park, and Pryor Public Schools.
Pryor also offers a variety of recreational activities for residents and visitors alike. The city has several parks including Pryor Creek Recreation Area which features camping sites, fishing ponds, trails for hiking and biking, playgrounds, picnic areas, and more. There are also several golf courses in the area including Cherokee Hills Golf Course which offers an 18-hole championship course with views of Lake Hudson.
In addition to its recreational offerings, Pryor also boasts a vibrant cultural scene with numerous festivals throughout the year such as the annual Mayes County Fair & Rodeo held each June. The city also hosts an annual music festival called Rocklahoma that brings some of the biggest names in rock music to town each summer.
