Elk City, Oklahoma Description
Elk City, Oklahoma is a small city located in western Oklahoma, about 110 miles west of Oklahoma City. It is the county seat of Beckham County and has a population of around 11,000 people. The city was founded in 1901 and was named after the large elk herds that roamed the area at the time.
The city is known for its rich history and culture, with many historic buildings still standing today. The downtown area is home to several restaurants, shops, and other businesses. There are also several parks and recreational areas throughout the city.
The economy of Elk City is largely based on agriculture and oil production. The city has several large oil refineries located nearby, as well as numerous agricultural operations. In addition to these industries, Elk City also has a thriving tourism industry due to its proximity to Lake Altus-Lugert and other attractions in the area.
Elk City is served by two school districts: Elk City Public Schools and Western Oklahoma State College. The city also has a hospital, library, museum, movie theater, golf course, bowling alley, and several churches. There are also numerous festivals held throughout the year such as the annual Red Dirt Music Festival which celebrates local music talent from across Oklahoma.
