Chickasha, Oklahoma Description
Chickasha is a city located in Grady County, Oklahoma, United States. It is the county seat of Grady County and the principal city of the Chickasha Micropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 16,036 at the 2010 census. Chickasha is home to the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma.
Chickasha was founded by Hobart Johnstone Whitley, a land developer, banker, farmer and Rock Island Railroad executive. The founding took place in 1892 when the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railway (CRI&P) built a track through Indian Territory. A post office was established in June 1892. One of the earliest industrial plants to come to Chickasha was the Chickasha Cotton Oil Company, which was established in 1899.
The town's name is derived from the Choctaw words chikashsha ("chicasa") and sha ("big"). The city is known as "The Peach Capital of Oklahoma" for its peach crop production; it also produces pecans and cotton.
Chickasha is home to many attractions including Shannon Springs Park, which features a lake with fishing docks, picnic areas and playgrounds; The Grady County Fairgrounds; The Washita Battlefield National Historic Site; The Chisholm Trail Museum; The Grady County Historical Museum; And many other attractions such as golf courses, shopping centers, restaurants and more.
The city has an active arts community with several galleries featuring local artists' work as well as live music venues that host local bands on weekends. There are also several annual festivals held throughout the year such as the Cotton Festival in April and Peach Festival in July that celebrate Chickasha's agricultural heritage.
Chickasha offers a variety of recreational activities including swimming pools, tennis courts, basketball courts, baseball fields and softball fields for sports enthusiasts; hiking trails for nature lovers; And several parks with playgrounds for families to enjoy.
