Elyria, Ohio Description
Elyria, Ohio is a city located in the northeastern part of the state, about 30 miles southwest of Cleveland. It is the county seat of Lorain County and has a population of approximately 54,000 people. The city was founded in 1817 and named after Heman Ely, who was one of the original settlers.
Elyria is known for its diverse economy and strong manufacturing base. Major employers include Invacare Corporation, Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems, and PolyOne Corporation. The city also has a vibrant downtown area with many shops, restaurants, and entertainment venues.
The city is home to several parks and recreational areas including Cascade Park which features a lake with fishing opportunities as well as walking trails and picnic areas. Other attractions include the Midway Mall which offers shopping and dining options as well as a movie theater. The Lorain County Fairgrounds are also located in Elyria and host various events throughout the year such as concerts, festivals, car shows, rodeos, and more.
Elyria is served by two school districts: Elyria City Schools and Elyria Catholic High School. There are also several higher education institutions nearby including Lorain County Community College, Oberlin College & Conservatory, Baldwin Wallace University, Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland State University, Kent State University at Lorain County Campus, and Ursuline College.
