Canton, Ohio Description
Canton, Ohio is a city located in Stark County in the northeastern part of the state. It is the county seat and largest city in Stark County, with a population of approximately 73,000 people. The city is situated on the Tuscarawas River and is home to several major employers, including the Pro Football Hall of Fame, TimkenSteel Corporation, Diebold Nixdorf, and Aultman Hospital.
Canton has a rich history that dates back to 1805 when it was founded by Bezaleel Wells. It was originally known as "The City of Mills" due to its many mills along the Tuscarawas River. In 1822, Canton became an incorporated village and in 1854 it was officially declared a city.
Canton is home to many attractions such as the Pro Football Hall of Fame, which honors professional football players from all eras; the McKinley Presidential Library & Museum; and the Canton Classic Car Museum. The city also hosts several annual events such as First Friday (a monthly celebration of art and culture), Canton Blues Festival (a three-day music festival), and Canton Film Festival (an independent film festival).
The city has a vibrant downtown area with numerous restaurants, shops, galleries, and entertainment venues. There are also several parks throughout Canton including Stadium Park (home to the Pro Football Hall of Fame), Monument Park (which features monuments dedicated to local heroes), and Market Square Park (which features an outdoor amphitheater).
Canton is served by two major highways: Interstate 77 and US Route 30. The Akron-Canton Airport is located just outside of town and provides service to many major cities throughout the United States. The city also has an extensive public transportation system that includes buses operated by SARTA (Stark Area Regional Transit Authority).
