Shirley, NY is a small hamlet located in the Town of Brookhaven in Suffolk County, New York. It is situated on the south shore of Long Island and is approximately 60 miles east of New York City. The population of Shirley was estimated to be around 13,000 in 2019.
The area was originally inhabited by the Setalcott Indians and was first settled by Europeans in 1655. The town was named after Governor Thomas Shirley who granted a patent for the land in 1665.
Shirley is home to several parks and recreational areas including Smith Point County Park, which offers swimming, fishing, boating, camping and other outdoor activities. There are also several golf courses located nearby as well as a number of restaurants and shops.
