Rome, New York Description
Rome, NY is a city located in Oneida County, New York. It is situated on the banks of the Mohawk River and is part of the Utica-Rome Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city has a population of 33,000 people and covers an area of 18.6 square miles.
Rome was founded in 1796 by Revolutionary War veterans who were granted land by the state of New York for their service. The city was named after Rome, Italy, and quickly grew to become an important industrial center due to its location at the confluence of two rivers. In the 19th century, Rome was home to several large factories that produced textiles, paper products, and other goods.
Today, Rome is a vibrant city with a diverse economy that includes manufacturing, healthcare, education, and tourism. The city is home to Griffiss International Airport and Fort Stanwix National Monument which attract visitors from all over the world. There are also several colleges and universities located in Rome including Utica College and SUNY Polytechnic Institute.
The downtown area of Rome features many historic buildings as well as modern shops and restaurants. There are also several parks located throughout the city including Bellamy Park which offers walking trails and picnic areas along with views of the Mohawk River. Additionally, there are numerous cultural events held throughout the year such as concerts at the Capitol Theatre or outdoor festivals at Bellamy Park.
