Newburgh, NY is a city located in Orange County, New York, United States. It is situated on the west bank of the Hudson River, approximately 60 miles north of New York City. The city has a population of 28,000 and is part of the larger Newburgh-Beacon metropolitan area.
Newburgh was founded in 1709 by German Palatine settlers and was originally named "Newburgh after the city of Neuburg an der Donau in Bavaria, Germany. The city quickly grew to become an important port on the Hudson River and was home to many prominent figures during the Revolutionary War. Today, Newburgh is known for its historic architecture and vibrant arts scene.
The downtown area of Newburgh features a variety of shops and restaurants as well as several historic sites such as Washington's Headquarters State Historic Site and Dutch Reformed Church. The waterfront area offers stunning views of the Hudson River and is home to several parks including Algonquin Park which features a beach, picnic areas, playgrounds, and walking trails.
The city also boasts several cultural attractions such as the Downing Film Center which showcases independent films from around the world; Motorcyclepedia Museum which houses over 500 vintage motorcycles; and Safe Harbors Ann Street Gallery which features rotating exhibitions from local artists.
Newburgh is also home to Mount Saint Mary College which offers undergraduate degrees in a variety of disciplines including business administration, education, nursing, psychology, social work and more.
