Mount Vernon, New York Description
Mount Vernon, NY is a city located in Westchester County, New York. It is situated just north of the Bronx and is part of the New York metropolitan area. The city has a population of approximately 68,000 people and covers an area of 5.3 square miles.
Mount Vernon is known for its rich history and diverse culture. It was founded in 1664 by John Richbell and was originally named Richbellville. The city was later renamed Mount Vernon after George Washington's estate in Virginia.
The city has a vibrant downtown area with many shops, restaurants, and entertainment venues. There are also several parks located throughout the city including Memorial Park, which features a memorial to those who served in World War I and II as well as a playground and picnic areas.
Mount Vernon is home to several educational institutions including Monroe College, Concordia College, Westchester Community College, and Yeshiva University of the Arts. The city also has several cultural attractions such as the Hudson River Museum, Pelham Art Center, and the Neuberger Museum of Art at Purchase College.
Mount Vernon is easily accessible by car or public transportation with Metro-North Railroad providing service to Grand Central Station in Manhattan as well as other points throughout Westchester County. The city also has two major highways running through it: Interstate 95 (the Cross-Westchester Expressway) and the Hutchinson River Parkway (which connects Mount Vernon to White Plains).
