Great Neck, New York Description
Great Neck, NY is a village located in Nassau County on the North Shore of Long Island. It is part of the Greater New York City metropolitan area and is considered one of the most affluent communities in the United States. The village has a population of approximately 10,000 people and covers an area of 5.3 square miles.
The village was first settled by English settlers in 1643 and was originally known as Madnan's Neck. It was later renamed Great Neck due to its location at the neck of Cow Bay, which is now known as Manhasset Bay. The village has a rich history and was once home to many prominent figures such as F. Scott Fitzgerald, who wrote his novel The Great Gatsby while living in Great Neck.
The village is home to many parks and recreational areas, including Steppingstone Park, which features a playground, basketball courts, tennis courts, and a pool; Kings Point Park, which offers views of Manhasset Bay; and John F Kennedy Memorial Park, which features a memorial dedicated to President John F Kennedy. There are also several golf courses located within the village limits.
Great Neck is served by two school districts: Great Neck Public Schools and Great Neck Union Free School District. The public schools offer students an excellent education with high test scores and graduation rates that exceed state averages. The Union Free School District offers students an even higher level of education with advanced classes such as AP courses and honors classes available for those who qualify.
The village also boasts several shopping centers including Americana Manhasset Mall, which features upscale stores such as Saks Fifth Avenue; Miracle Mile Shopping Center; and Loehmann's Plaza Shopping Center. There are also numerous restaurants located throughout the village offering cuisine from all over the world including Italian, Chinese, Japanese, Mexican, Indian, French, Greek and more!
Great Neck is easily accessible via public transportation with both Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) stations located within the village limits providing service to Manhattan in under an hour. Additionally there are several bus routes that run through the area providing access to other parts of Long Island as well as Queens and Brooklyn.
